I agree with you that VDI bashing is popular. It has been for some time. I think that it is due in part to some VDI vendors proclaiming that VDI will replace all desktops over the next x number of years. The likes of Gartner don’t do anybody any favors either. Ie; The VDI market will be worth x billion of dollars by year 2015.
A good end user strategy will list VDI as an option for a particular use case. Other options exist to address other use cases. Exactly as you say, the Architect’s role is to match technology with use cases. VDI has its place in end user services. But it isn’t the panacea.
